Deal proves there is life after Playstation!

Swaledale Outdoor Club has announced a partnership with Teesdale Sailing Club, which will provide its members with access to Teesdale’s sailing facilities, boats and expertise.

Our club already offers a wide range of pursuits supported by its members, said Paul Brooks, Club Chairman. When Teesdale approached us with the idea of offering taster membership, allowing our people to ‘dip their toe’ into sailing, the whole Committee agreed it could be of real value and interest to our members.

Paul Davison, Teesdale’s new Commodore said

We are really pleased to have forged this link with a like-minded organisation. With over 300 paid up members, Swaledale Outdoor Club proves that there is life after Playstation. We are very keen to introduce them to the thrills and pleasures of sailing, with a fair chance of dipping more than their toes into Grassholme’s water!

The Richmond based club was formed nearly 50 years ago by a group of friends with a love of the outdoors. Initially skiing, walking and climbing were offered but the club gradually added canoeing, cycling, potholing, mountain biking, fell running, orienteering, and now sailing. With adult membership a mere £20 a year, joining the club is an excellent way of trying activities for the first time and meeting others of all ages with similar interests.
Teesdale Sailing Club by comparison is a youthful 42 years old. Last year it doubled membership and attracted significant funding to help develop its facilities.

As well as forging links such as this with SOC, we are working with schools and youth groups, said Tony Merry, club development officer. We can now offer introductory sessions and accredited RYA training in addition to our racing and cruising activities. Growing any sports club has challenges but we do seem to be on an upward curve, with new members and enquiries coming in at a rate not seen for a very long time. We are all really looking forward to the coming year.

Both clubs can be contacted via their respective web sites – and
