John Merricks Sailing Trust Award

We are almost there – following the award to purchase wetsuits for our junior sailors from County Durham Community Foundation Trust, we have just been awarded a grant to fund some aditional sailing dinghies.

The award is from the John Merricks Sailing Trust and will enable us to purchase some Optimist dinghies.

These dinghies are ideal for sailors aged 6-12 years and have been used for many years to train UK youngsters, some who have become International and Olympic champions.

John Merricks was a leading Olympic sailor and 1996 Olympic silver medallist who died tragically in a car accident whilst competing in the 1997 Melges 24 European Championships in Italy.

The Trust’s aim is to provide help to those young people who display similar drive, talent and commitment to sailing as John, but who perhaps themselves need support to set them on their way to fulfilling their dreams.

So, anyone who is interested in emulating our sailing greats, we have the gear, we have the boats, we have the water and we can help you on your way.

The Teesdale Scout Group and Butterknowle Sea Scouts have new cadet club memberships and they will be the first to try out the new boats and gear.  But you don’t have to be a scout, just come along on any Sunday or attend one of our open days – don’t leave sailing until you are 30/40/50/60 – it will be too late to become world class!
