Teesdale Virtual regatta

Last Tuesday saw the inaugural Teesdale SWC e-sailing Virtual Regatta. Six armchair sailors took part in a series of exhilarating and fun races via our computer screens. We used Zoom to chat online and occasionally shout port or starboard to one another, as we raced our Laser dinghies in Portsmouth, Cowes and by popular demand San Francisco.
A few technical glitches were soon overcome, although steering was more of a problem. There were some close races, and lots of close calls and rule infringements.
As suspected Toby Waggett’s greater experience in e-sailing (he has been ‘secretly’ taking part with another club) resulted in a series win for him, but it was close with only one point separating him from second placed William Hewitt. Both had two wins from their four races. Some rule infringements and erratic steering relegated the other Hewitts to a share of third.
Such was the fun and entertainment that at one stage we even had a Covid secure ‘crowd’ watching and shouting encouragement.
Everyone had a great time and it was agreed that we should do it all again next week, when we will change boats for something a little faster and with two sails.
We now want more competitors. If you weren’t there, don’t be square, join us next week for an evening of fun and games…literally.
