Adult Courses - The National Sailing Scheme

Level One Start Sailing. A two day practical course with some theory. This is a short introduction to sailing for novices; no previous experience is necessary. Participants should be fit and confident in the water. The course covers the rigging, launching and recovery of boats. Basic sailing techniques and manoeuvres, the Five Essentials, rope work, weather and rule of the road. You will be issued with a RYA logbook, and a Start Sailing handbook. On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate to go in your logbook. For more detail please talk to your instructor, see your logbook or visit the RYA site.


Level Two Basic Skills. It will be assumed that every student starting this course has mastered the practical skills and absorbed the theory contained in Level One - Start Sailing. Although it is not necessary to have a Level One certificate a student's sailing should be of that standard before starting this course. You should be able to sail in light winds without an instructor on board. You will be taught how to rig according to the weather conditions. Types of launching and recovery, coming alongside, and man overboard recovery will be practised. Tacking whilst sailing upwind, and gybing in a controlled manner will be covered. Capsize recovery, racing and meteorology will be considered along with sailing theory and background. On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate to go in your logbook. Level Three Better Sailing. This course allows for the opportunity to practise and consolidate sailing techniques and experience some of the activities that the advanced modules have to offer. You will learn how to sail using efficient and skilful application of the Five Essentials. You should be able to tack maintaining boat speed and balance. The core skills of launching and recovery, man overboard and capsize drills should be efficiently and effectively performed. Taster sessions will give course participants a chance to experience two of Seamanship skills, Race skills Spinnaker sailing skills and Performance sailing.
