Race

Club Racing
Open to all members, club racing is fun, exciting and sociable. We run several series and one-off competitions throughout the year (April - October) on Sundays. We use a handicap system, so whatever class of boat you sail you can be competitive. Racing is a great way to improve your sailing and a bit of friendly fun - so come along and give it a go!
How it Works
Racing happens on most Sunday Watersports days as shown on the club calendar. Further racing information including the approximate start times, the type of racing and the number of races can be found in our Racing Programme: Teesdale SWC - 2025 Racing Programme. On a typical day we have one race in the morning starting c.11:15am and two back-to-back races in the afternoon. Arrangements for one-off events may differ, so watch out for announcements and updates to the club calendar.
Please note that everyone is always welcome on the water, whether taking part in club racing or not!
Types of Racing
Handicap Racing:
- Each class has their average lap time calculated using a nationally recognised handicap.
- So the winner may not be the first boat to cross the line but instead the sailor who sailed their boat to the best of its ability.
Pursuit Racing:
- Each class starts at a specific number of minutes after the slowest boat so the faster boats try to catch and overtake the slower ones. If we all sail efficiently we should all finish together!
