Portsmouth Yardstick - Handicaps
The Portsmouth Yardstick System is administered by the Royal Yachting Association and aims to handicap boats based on their relative performance against the other boats they race with. This means races should come down to who sails best - not who has the fastest and most expensive boat. Handicaps are allocated and administered by clubs to suit their local factors such as boat type, wind trends and water type. Below are the handicaps used at Teesdale SWC:

Boats / configurations in bold have no current RYA PY (either on the full or limited / experimental data lists). These numbers have been estimated. If you're wondering why there have been some particularly big changes for 2025, the RYA have, for the first time in 30 years, changed the formula used to calculate the handicaps. We'll see how it works out for us! If you want to know more, you can read about it on the RYA website.
