Youth Sailing
Stage One This is a course of four sessions and will get you on the water and sailing under supervision in light winds. The course covers; rigging the boat, launching and recovery, tying simple knots, basic sailing techniques and manoeuvres, what to wear, capsize recovery and basic weather. You will be issued with a RYA Youth Scheme logbook, and a Go Sailing handbook. On successful completion of the stage you will receive a certificate to go in your logbook. Stage Two Taught as part of our OnBoard Club. Your instructor will sign off each skill as you complete it. You will continue to develop your basic sailing skills, as well as rope work and 'rules of the road'. You will be able to tack and control boat speed, sail a shallow triangle course, get out of 'irons'. Sailing terms and the 'Five Essentials' will be covered. . Stage Three - Taught as part of our OnBoard Club. You will continue to develop rigging and sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory, as well as launching and recovery skills. Reefing the sail, coming alongside and mooring will be practised. You will be able to sail around a triangular course in moderate winds. Stage Two also covers basic racing and more advanced theory, and recovery of a man overboard. . On successful completion of this stage you will receive a certificate to go in your logbook. Stage Four Taught as part of our OnBoard Club. Requires you to learn how to sail a double handed boat as crew or helm applying all the skills that you have learnt up to and including Stage Three. You will be introduced to more advanced knots and learn to communicate with another person in the boat. You will learn to use the five essentials effectively. The Advanced Modules These can be offered as required. At Teesdale we can offer Seamanship, Sailing with Spinnakers, Performance Sailing, and Start Racing. For more detail please talk to your instructor, see your logbook or visit the RYA site.
Start Racing This will develop and provide you with the basic skills needed to enter a race and understand the techniques, sequences and rules. Race starts, boat handling, speed, tactics and strategy are all covered. On successful completion of this module you will receive a certificate to go in your logbook. Ideally on completion of this course students should compete in a round of the North East & Yorkshire Youth Travellers Series.
